About My Lessons

My Teaching Philosophy

I have many years of experience teaching all ages and standards of playing. I teach piano lessons from my home in Bordon. I am a very enthusiastic, encouraging patient teacher. I am happy to teach all styles of piano playing. I am an active member of The Curious Piano Teachers and regularly take part in webinars and do courses in piano teaching.

I believe that all students have a musical potential and my role as a teacher is to act as a guide to release this potential. My lessons are tailored to meet the individual needs of the student within a core framework. I believe that as a teacher it is important to continue to learn  new strategies, new ideas and new philosophies. My belief is that this will continue  to bring a fresh approach to my lessons. I provide a warm and relaxed room for my students’ learning environment.

It is my hope that when they leave this environment each week they will come away with a feeling of accomplishment and enthusiasm that will carry them forward until their next lesson.

All Students Welcome

All abilities and ages are welcome . Whether you are a complete beginner, more advanced or returning to the piano after a number of years, all of my lessons are tailored to the individual student. This is the beauty of one to one lessons.  All styles of piano playing are taught.

For beginners and intermediate students I use a variety of method books to suit individual styles and personalities.

My favourite and go to piano method is Piano Adventures. This method envelopes all styles of playing plus improvisation and theory. It is very much loved by students of all ages.

Exams

I offer teaching for all the major exam boards from Pre grade to grade 8. However many students prefer a pathway purely for pleasure without the pressure of exams or performances.

Students can take formal exams if they would like to approach this route. But there is no pressure for them to do this.

I use multiple exam boards so that exams are fully suited to each student.

I use the following exam boards:

  • Music Teachers’ Board (MTB) – more info here
  • Trinity College London – more info here

Janet's Piano Group

I have a private Facebook page for students, their families and teachers. This is a platform for sharing ideas about piano playing and anything music related.

Once a term, every student has the option to share a video of their performances. These performances are always well received within the private group, and are a real encouragement to students and parents alike.
